B-2917 – China Southern Boeing 737: Twenty Years in China

For almost twenty years, Boeing 737 B-2917 flew for one airline.

China Southern Airlines.

Delivered new in 2004, the Boeing 737-700 spent its entire commercial career with the Chinese carrier, becoming part of the enormous domestic and regional network that connects cities across China and Asia.

Unlike many retired aircraft that pass through several airlines, countries and registrations during their lives, B-2917 remained remarkably consistent.

One registration.

One airline.

Almost two decades of flying.

After its retirement, the aircraft made one final journey from China to Europe. In 2024, B-2917 arrived at Enschede in the Netherlands, where the aircraft was eventually dismantled.

Part of its genuine fuselage skin was preserved by Aircrafttag, allowing a physical piece of this China Southern Boeing 737 to continue its story.

The Story of B-2917 Begins

B-2917 was built as a Boeing 737-71B, part of Boeing's 737 Next Generation family.

Its manufacturer serial number was MSN 32940 and its Boeing line number was 1624.

The aircraft was delivered to China Southern Airlines in December 2004. China Southern's own fleet records list B-2917 as a Boeing 737-71B entering the fleet on 26 December 2004.

It would remain with the airline for its entire operational career.

At a time when China's aviation market was expanding rapidly, aircraft such as B-2917 became an important part of the country's growing air transport network.

The Boeing 737 Next Generation

The Boeing 737-700 belongs to the Next Generation, or 737NG, family.

Developed as the successor to earlier Boeing 737 Classic variants, the NG generation introduced redesigned wings, improved aerodynamics, updated flight decks and more efficient CFM56 engines.

The 737-700 was the smallest of the main passenger variants in the 737NG family.

That size made it particularly useful on routes where the capacity of the larger 737-800 was not required.

For China Southern, which operated an extensive network ranging from major cities to smaller regional destinations, that flexibility made the type a useful part of the fleet.

B-2917 would spend almost two decades performing exactly this kind of work.

Twenty Years with China Southern

China Southern Airlines operates one of the largest airline networks in China.

From its main base in Guangzhou and other hubs throughout the country, the airline developed an enormous network of domestic and international services.

B-2917 became part of this operation.

Over the years, the aircraft could be seen at airports throughout China.

Photographic records document B-2917 at locations including Guangzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Xiamen, Dalian and Lijiang – small snapshots of a career spent connecting destinations across an enormous country.

And throughout that career, one thing remained unchanged:

B-2917 continued flying for China Southern.

One Aircraft. One Airline.

Many commercial aircraft experience complicated histories.

They move between airlines.

They receive new registrations.

They cross continents and sometimes change roles completely.

B-2917 followed a different path.

From its delivery in 2004 until its withdrawal from service, it remained associated with China Southern Airlines.

Its registration remained B-2917.

Its identity remained unmistakably connected with the airline.

That continuity makes the aircraft an interesting record of an important period in Chinese commercial aviation.

During B-2917's lifetime, air travel within China expanded enormously.

New airports opened, networks grew and generations of newer aircraft entered service.

Through much of that transformation, B-2917 continued doing what it had been built to do: carrying passengers.

The Final Years

By the early 2020s, B-2917 was approaching two decades of service.

China Southern continued modernizing its fleet while older aircraft gradually reached the end of their operational careers.

B-2917 was withdrawn from use on 12 May 2023 and placed into storage at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport.

After almost nineteen years with China Southern, its passenger-carrying career was over.

But the aircraft still had one remarkable journey ahead.

And this time, it would leave China for good.

The Final Flight to Europe

In May 2024, B-2917 left China and travelled to Europe.

Its destination was Enschede Airport Twente in the Netherlands.

After arriving on 21 May 2024, the former China Southern aircraft was stored there under the US registration N320FT.

The journey marked an extraordinary geographical ending for an aircraft that had spent virtually its entire working life in China.

After almost twenty years of operations in Asia, MSN 32940 had arrived in Europe at the end of its life.

There would be no second airline career.

No return to passenger service.

In October 2024, the aircraft was dismantled at Enschede.

But not all of B-2917 disappeared.

From Boeing 737 to Aircrafttag

Part of the genuine fuselage skin of B-2917 was preserved and transformed by Aircrafttag into collectible pieces of aviation history.

The aluminium once formed part of an aircraft that spent almost twenty years flying for China Southern Airlines.

Its surface can still show traces of that working life.

Original paint, scratches, marks and variations in the material remain part of the history of the aircraft.

Each Aircrafttag therefore connects directly back to Boeing 737 MSN 32940.

China Southern Airlines.

Registration B-2917.

Almost two decades of flying.

A Piece of Chinese Aviation History

B-2917 did not need multiple airlines or a succession of different registrations to create an interesting story.

Its story is remarkable precisely because of its continuity.

Delivered to China Southern in 2004, it remained with the same airline throughout its commercial life.

For almost twenty years, the aircraft formed a small part of the vast network that connects cities across China and the wider region.

Then, at the end of its career, B-2917 crossed thousands of kilometres from China to the Netherlands on its final journey.

The complete aircraft no longer exists.

But part of the genuine fuselage skin of Boeing 737 B-2917 has been preserved by Aircrafttag, allowing a physical piece of its story to continue.
